Environmental Requirements |
Core Environmental Performance Characteristics |
Fitness for Purpose
Certified products should be good performers
in their intended application. Certain standards of product
performance are implicit in the label. |
Ceilite products are guaranteed for a period of 5 years. The
products have been independently tested for strength, thermal
conductivity and acoustic absorption and satisfy the
requirements of this criterion. |
|
Timber and Other Natural Materials Controversial Sources |
Paper sourced from Visy "Enviroliner
board" is 100% recycled. Visy 100% recycled paper is now
used in all products. Ceilite meets the timber requirements of
this Furniture and Fittings Standard.
|
Treatment
Wood and natural materials used in furniture products must
not be treated or impregnated with fungicides and insecticides
that are classified due to their hazardous nature by the IARC as
Type 1 or 2A.
|
The paper used in the Ceilite
products subject of this Environmental Product Declaration is
sourced from Australian fiber, and holds FSC certification, and
is therefore not treated in accordance with this criterion. For
verification, GECS received a signed declaration from the paper
supplier stating that the paper is not treated or impregnated.

Air Emissions
For detail; please view: http://www.geca.org.au/
standards/ GECA%2028-2006%20-%20 Furniture%20and%20
Fittings%20v1.8.pdf
|
The Ceilite products do not
contain any formaldehyde; therefore this criterion is not
applicable.
|
Resin Identification Codes
Certified products must mark each individual plastic product
or component weighing greater than 100g with an appropriate
resin identification code promulgated by the Plastics and
Chemical Industry Association.
|
Due to the fact that the plastic
is inseparable from the cardboard, and that Ceilite has agreed
to provide means of recycling through their custodianship policy
(See Product Custodianship criterion below), the product is
exempt from the requirements of this criterion.
|
Adhesives
With the exception of Section 3.2.1.4, adhesives must be
certified by the Good Environmental Choice Label, the EU Flower
label, the New Zealand Environmental Choice Label or the Nordic
Swan label or satisfy the requirements of GECA Standard No. 1:
Adhesives.
|
The adhesives used in the Ceilite
panels comply with the requirements of the GECA Standard No - 1:
Adhesives. The Ceilite products subject of this report comply
with the requirements of this criterion.
|
Overall Loads
In order to promote the reduction of pollutant hazards in the
disposal, landfill and/or incineration of end of life furniture,
the following substances shall not be added to eco-labelled
products during manufacture:
Arsenic Cadmium Copper Lead
Mercury Fluorine Elemental Chlorine Pentachlorophenol (PCP) Tar
oils (benzo (a) pyrene)
|
GECS is satisfied that the
materials used in Ceilite's products subject of this report
comply with the requirements of this criterion. MSDS for all
production ingredients have been reviewed by GECS, and none
contain any of the pollutant hazards dealt with in this
criterion. No prohibited substances or additives are contained
in the Ceilite product either. Letters from the polyurethane
suppliers state that the material used by Ceilite does not
contain any VOCs or heavy metals. Furthermore, GECS has
inspected MSDS for EPS Polystyrene from the four suppliers, and
is satisfied with the overall loads of these products.
|
Prohibited Substances
Furniture or fittings shall not contain carcinogenic substances
in categories 1 or 2A as classed by the International Agency for
Research on Cancer - http://monographs.iarc.fr/
ENG/Classification
|
A review of all production
ingredients and MSDS for all ingredients used establishes
compliance with the requirements of this criterion. None of the
carcinogenic substances dealt with by this criterion are used in
the Ceilite products.
|
Separability
Certified products shall be easily disassembled to facilitate
the recovery and recycling of constituent materials. The
following materials shall be easily separated without the need
for special tools or expertise: Aluminium, if it composes ? 5%
by weight of the product, Steel, if it composes ? 10% by weight
of the product, Glass, if it composes ? 10% by weight of the
product, Plastic, if it composes ? 20% by weight of the product. |
The EPS polystyrene component of
the product makes up at most 17% of the products' weight;
therefore this criterion is not applicable. |
Product Custodianship
If the product is not recyclable (or separable into recyclable
parts) in mainstream local recycling systems, the manufacturer
shall accept their product without additional cost (excluding
transportation costs) for further recycling, or have
arrangements with a local recycler to accept the product, or
have an established product stewardship program. Products
collected under the scheme shall not be disposed of in landfill
or by incineration. |
GECS has reviewed a copy of
Ceilite's take-back policy. Ceilite's "End of Life
Recycling Guarantee" is part of its Extended Producer
Responsibility (EPR) initiative and is clear and comprehensive.
The policy stipulates that once the Polystyrene is reground, the
pulp will be distributed to a local company to be re-used in the
manufacture of lightweight concrete blocks. GECS believes
Ceilite has the capacity to carry out this product custodianship
policy in full. |
Coatings/Treatments
Furniture and fittings products (or components) must not be
impregnated, labelled, coated or otherwise treated in a manner
which would prevent post consumer recycling. Exemption may be
made for products with a long product life where a coating or
treatment would further extend the useful life of the product. |
GECS has reviewed a copy of
Ceilite's take-back policy, and their does not seem to be any
technical barrier to the prost-consumer recycling of the Ceilite
products under assessment. |
Replacement Parts
For those parts of a product which are subject to wear (e.g.,
hinges, locks, table leaves), functionally compatible
replacements shall be guaranteed for a period of at least five
years. The manufacturer must make individual replacement parts
available to consumers. |
This criterion of the Standard is
not applicable to the Ceilite products since they do not contain
any parts that are subject to wear. |
Packaging Requirements
Chlorinated or halogenated plastics must not be used in product
packaging. Used packaging shall be able to be recycled by local
recycling systems. |
No chlorinated or halogenated
plastics are used as packaging. This has been verified by GECS
via documentation review of specifications of the packaging
used. The plastic used is Polyethylene and compliant with the
requirements of this criterion. |
Product Information
The manufacturer must provide written information to the
consumer clearly stating: 1. The intended use of the product. 2.
Instructions for correct use and storage so as to maximise the
product lifetime. 3. Maintenance instructions, if required.
Maintenance instructions must not specify the use of any
chemical or coating limited by any part of this standard. 4.
Recycling instructions for the product end-of-life. |
Documented installation and
maintenance instructions are provided for all the products under
assessment. |
