Core Environmental Criteria Tested:
|
Environmental Requirements |
Core Environmental Performance Characteristics |
Requirements for
Wood
The wood included in
the floor covering must
meet either ‘The product
must be made from
recycled wood.’
OR
‘A minimum of 30 % by
weight of the wood in
the floor covering must
be from plantations or
certified sustainable
managed forests. |
All the wood fibre used in the manufacturing of
the Comcork products under assessment is post consumer wine
cork. Logic Australia has established a reliable supply line for
procuring large amounts of used wine cork from post consumer
waste. Evidence of supply was confirmed by delivery docket and
established supply agreements obtained by GECA during the site
assessment. |
3.3 Hazardous
Substances
3.3.1 The floor covering
must not contain more
than 0.1% by weight (in
total) of substances that
are classified under the
National Industrial
Chemicals Notification
and Assessment Scheme
(NICNAS) as:
6.1 acutely toxic
6.6 known or suspected
human mutagens
6.7 known or suspected
human carcinogens
6.8 known or suspected
human reproductive or
developmental toxicants |
In addition to cork, synthetic rubber, floor
sealer, adhesives, lubricants and preservatives are used to
create the Comcork product. Most of these
substances are classified as non-toxic and where toxicity was
identified the weight of substance in the final product was
below the 0.1% requirement of our standards. The ingredients
used for the Comcork product are considered environmentally
preferable. |
3.3.2 The floor covering
must not contain more
than 1% by weight (in
total) of substances in
the surface treatment of
the flooring product or in
materials that have
direct expose to users of
the product, that are
classified under the
National Industrial
Chemicals Notification
and Assessment Scheme
(NICNAS) as:
6.3 skin irritants
6.5 respiratory and
contact sensitizers |
No production ingredients used in the Comcork
product are classified as skin irritants or respiratory and
contact sensitizers by NICNAS. This was
determined after reviewing MSDS sheets for all production
ingredients. |
3.3.3 The following
substances must not be
actively added to the
floor covering during
manufacturing:
- Short-chained
Chlorinated paraffin’s of
carbon atom length 10-
13 atoms
- Brominated paraffin’s
- Organic tin compounds
- Phthalates
- Polybrominated
diphenyl ethers. |
The substance Chlorinated Paraffin is used in the
products under verification as a flame retardant. GECA has
received information confirming that the product used by Comcork
is a long-chained polymer (chain length 22- 28), and therefore
less reactive and dangerous compared to short-chained
Chlorinated Paraffins. This substance meets the requirements of
our standards. No additional substances listed in this criterion
are added to the product. |
3.3.4 Products that
contain the following
substances must not
actively be added to the
floor covering during
manufacturing:
- Cadmium (Cd)
- Lead (Pb)
- Mercury (Hg). |
Cadmium, Lead and Mercury are not actively added
to the product. |
3.3.5 Azo-based dyes
that shed carcinogenic
aryl amines must not be
used. |
The Comcork product comes in a wide range of
colours. However no azo based dyes used in the production
process. Comcork meets the criterion of this standard. |
Formaldehyde
content and
formaldehyde
emitting additives
Floors containing
additives with
formaldehyde content or
formaldehyde-emitting
substances must fulfill
one of the following
requirements (either a,
or b):
a) Control of
formaldehyde from the
finished floor.
Formaldehyde emissions
from the finished
product (i.e. the floor
covering) must be less
than 0.13 mg/m3 in air.
b) Control of
formaldehyde during the
production of panels for
the floor. |
Formaldehyde test emissions from a sample product
were extremely low and in conformance to the requirements of
this criterion. |
Waste Minimisation
and Management
The manufacturing
process must include
processes to minimise
waste through recovery
and reuse or
reprocessing and/or use
of waste for energy.
The product must be
designed in such a way
that it can be safely
processed after
use by means of normal
methods available in the
market in which it will
be used and disposed
(e.g. re-use,
recycling/reprocessing
and/or safe disposal). |
The manufacturing process of the Comcork products
produces very little waste. There is no apparent technical
barrier for the reuse of the materials at the end of the
products life. The manufacturer has agreed to implement a take
back policy; this was
reviewed by GECA and is found to be in conformance to the
requirements of this criterion. During a site assessment a GECA
auditor witnessed trials currently
undergoing in producing a product from waste generated in
production, if these are found to be satisfactory Comcork will
incorporate all waste and returned product into such new
products. |
Product Information
The floor covering
products must be
accompanied by
information for product
suppliers, installers and
consumers on the
preparation, installation,
and maintenance. |
An inspection of information material supplied by
Logic Australia establishes full compliance with the
requirements of this criterion. This information is available to
customers upon purchase. |
