Core Environmental Criteria Tested:

Environmental Requirements

Core Environmental Performance Characteristics

Fitness for Purpose
Certified products should be good performers in their intended application. Certain standards of product performance are implicit in the label.

Ezi-Store is sold with a ten year warranty. Ezi-Glide, the mobile shelving system has a 5 year guarantee. The former meets AS 2143 -1978. The latter does not have an applicable Standard however it is principally composed of Ezi-Store units constructed on a sliding floor system.
All of the safe working loads of these products are in accordance with AS 2143. A site inspection showed adequate quality procedures are utilised during manufacture.

Timber and Other Natural Materials
Controversial Sources

The Ezi-Glide unit sometimes contains an infill particle board floor which is pre-cut to size by Plyboard Distributors who buy Grade E1 particle board from Laminex - a product which is certified separately by GECA under Licence LA-2005 and therefore is compliant with the requirements of this criterion.

Treatment
Wood and natural materials used in furniture products must not be treated or impregnated with fungicides and insecticides that are classified due to their hazardous nature by the IARC as Type 1 or 2A.

Resin Identification Codes
Certified products must mark each individual plastic product or component weighing greater than 100g with an appropriate resin identification code promulgated by the Plastics and Chemical Industry Association.

A plastic handle is an optional component for the Ezi-Glide unit. The PACIA Code is “7 - Other” and Commando Storage Systems have committed to placing a sticker on this optional component in order identify it with the appropriate resin code.

Adhesives
With the exception of Section 3.2.1.4, adhesives must be certified by the Good Environmental Choice Label, the EU Flower label, the New Zealand Environmental Choice Label or the Nordic Swan label or satisfy the requirements of GECA Standard No. 1: Adhesives.

The Powerstick by Powers Fasteners is used in applying the false floor, this product is GECA certified under licence POF-2006 and therefore compliant with the requirements of this criterion.

Overall Loads
In order to promote the reduction of pollutant hazards in the disposal, landfill and/or incineration of end of life furniture, the following substances shall not be added to eco-labelled products during manufacture:

Arsenic
Cadmium
Copper
Lead
Mercury
Fluorine
Elemental Chlorine
Pentachlorophenol (PCP)
Tar oils (benzo (a) pyrene)

A review of all production ingredients and MSDS for all ingredients used, including adhesive powder coating etc, establishes compliance with the requirements of this criterion. None of the substances dealt with by this criterion are used in the Ezi-Store or Ezi-Glide products.

Prohibited Substances
Furniture or fittings shall not contain carcinogenic substances in categories 1 or 2A as classed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer – http://monographs.iarc.fr/ENG/Classification

A review of all production ingredients and MSDS for all ingredients used, including adhesive powder coating etc, establishes compliance with the requirements of this criterion. None of the carcinogenic substances dealt with by this criterion are used in the Ezi-Store or Ezi-Glide products

Separability
Certified products shall be easily disassembled to facilitate the recovery and recycling of constituent materials.
The following materials shall be easily separated without the need for special tools or expertise:
Aluminium, if it composes ≥ 5% by weight of the product,
Steel, if it composes ≥ 10% by weight of the product,
Glass, if it composes ≥ 10% by weight of the product,
Plastic, if it composes ≥ 20% by weight of the product.

There is no technical barrier to the disassembly of the Commando Storage System certified products; this was confirmed during a site assessment of the manufacturing facility.
Product Custodianship
If the product is not recyclable (or separable into recyclable parts) in mainstream local recycling systems, the manufacturer shall accept their product without additional cost (excluding transportation costs) for further recycling, or have arrangements with a local recycler to accept the product, or have an established product stewardship program. Products collected under the scheme shall not be disposed of in landfill or by incineration.

A take-back policy has been developed in accordance with the requirements of this criterion. GECS is satisfied that Commando complies with this criterion of the Standard and has the capacity to implement and maintain their take-back policy.
Coatings/Treatments
Furniture and fittings products (or components) must not be impregnated, labelled, coated or otherwise treated in a manner which would prevent post consumer recycling. Exemption may be made for products with a long product life where a coating or treatment would further extend the useful life of the product.

No treatment is applied that would prevent recycling; this was confirmed during a site assessment of the manufacturing facility as well as via documentation review of production ingredients and Material Safety Data Sheets.
Replacement Parts
For those parts of a product which are subject to wear (e.g., hinges, locks, table leaves), functionally compatible replacements shall be guaranteed for a period of at least five years. The manufacturer must make individual replacement parts available to consumers.

The standard warranty statement offers replacement parts for those parts that are subject to wear.
Packaging Requirements
Chlorinated or halogenated plastics must not be used in product packaging. Used packaging shall be able to be recycled by local recycling systems.

No chlorinated or halogenated plastics are used as packaging. GECS inspected an MSDS for the shrink wrap used and found it to be recyclable and compliant with the requirements of this criterion. All other packaging is either re-used or recycled by local systems.

Product Information
The manufacturer must provide written information to the consumer clearly stating:
1. The intended use of the product.
2. Instructions for correct use and storage so as to maximise the product lifetime.
3. Maintenance instructions, if required. Maintenance instructions must not specify the use of any chemical or coating limited by any part of this standard.
4. Recycling instructions for the product end-of-life.

The intended use of the product is self-evident. Documented Operations and Maintenance Instructions are provided for both the Ezi-Glide and Ezi-Store products.
