Core Environmental Criteria Tested:

Environmental Requirements

Core Environmental Performance Characteristics
Fitness for Purpose
Certified products should be good performers in their intended application. Certain standards of product performance are implicit in the label.
The Neo and Beyon product range is covered by a 10 year warranty. The Neo product range is manufactured in Australia and has been certified by AFRDI is accordance with AS 4442 and AS 4442. The Beyon product range is manufactured in the UK and has been certified to British Standards BS 4875 and BS 6393, the UK factory is ISO 9001:2000 certified.
Timber and Other Natural Materials
Controversial Sources
The Neo and Beyon product ranges are available with Laminex E0 18mm and 25mm and D&R Henderson particle board. The Laminex boards are certified products with GECA (licence number LA-2005) and therefore are compliant with the requirements of this criterion.
Treatment
Wood and natural materials used in furniture products must not be treated or impregnated with fungicides and insecticides that are classified due to their hazardous nature by the IARC as Type 1 or 2A.
The Neo and Beyon product ranges are available with Laminex E0 18mm and 25mm and D&R Henderson particle board. The Laminex boards are certified products with GECA (licence number LF-2005) and therefore are compliant with the requirements of this criterion.
Air Emissions The Neo and Beyon product ranges are available with Laminex E0 18mm and 25mm and D&R Henderson particle board. The Laminex boards are certified products with GECA (licence number LF-2005) and therefore are compliant with the requirements of this criterion.
Resin Identification Codes
Certified products must mark each individual plastic product or component weighing greater than 100g with an appropriate resin identification code promulgated by the Plastics and Chemical Industry Association.
The Desking Systems Neo and Beyon product ranges which are the subject of this report, contain a small sheet of Acrylic. Desking Systems has committed to obtaining appropriate resin codes for the material.
Fabrics
All fabric comprising more than 10 % of the total weight of the product must be certified by the Good Environmental Choice Label, the EU Flower label or the Nordic Swan label or satisfy the requirements of GECA Standard No. 19: Textiles.
The Neo and Beyond product ranges are available with a fabric modesty screen, under the guidelines of this standard there is an allowance for a 10% by weight of non-certified components. The quantity of fabric used in the final product makes up very little of the product by weight and therefore this criterion is not applicable.
Adhesives
With the exception of Section 3.2.1.4, adhesives must be certified by the Good Environmental Choice Label, the EU Flower label, the New Zealand Environmental Choice Label or the Nordic Swan label or satisfy the requirements of GECA Standard No. 1: Adhesives.
Desking systems use an adhesive for edging. The manufacturer of the adhesive has provided a statement of declaration about the composition of the adhesive in compliance with the requirements of this criterion.
Overall Loads
In order to promote the reduction of pollutant hazards in the disposal, landfill and/or incineration of end of life furniture, the following substances shall not be added to eco-labelled products during manufacture:

Arsenic
Cadmium
Copper
Lead
Mercury
Fluorine
Elemental Chlorine
Pentachlorophenol (PCP)
Tar oils (benzo (a) pyrene)
Desking Systems Australia’s Neo and Beyon product ranges do not use any of the substances mentioned in this criterion, this has been verified via review of all MSDS and a site assessment of the manufacturing facility.
Prohibited Substances
Furniture or fittings shall not contain carcinogenic substances in categories 1 or 2A as classed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer – http://monographs.iarc.fr/ENG/Classification
The following compounds, their functional derivatives or in-situ precursors shall not be added to finished products, their component parts or be used at any stage of the manufacturing process, including as preparatory agents, cleaners or degreasers in the production facility:
Halogenated organic substances or solvents (e.g., binding agents).
Analine based amines.
The phthalates DEHP, DBP, DAP or BBP.
Aziridine or polyaziridines.
Pigments and additives that contain lead, tin, arsenic, cadmium, mercury or their compounds.
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or short-chain chlorinated organic flame retardants.
Desking Systems Australia’s Neo and Beyon product ranges do not use any of the substances mentioned in this criterion, this is apparent by a review of all MSDS and a site assessment of the manufacturing facility.
Separability
Certified products shall be easily disassembled to facilitate the recovery and recycling of constituent materials.
The following materials shall be easily separated without the need for special tools or expertise:
Aluminium, if it composes ≥ 5% by weight of the product,
Steel, if it composes ≥ 10% by weight of the product,
Glass, if it composes ≥ 10% by weight of the product,
Plastic, if it composes ≥ 20% by weight of the product.
The Desking Systems Australia’s Neo and Beyon product ranges can be disassembled into its component parts in 5 minutes by a non-skilled operative. This claim appears to be appropriate because of simplicity of the product and its modular nature by design.
Product Custodianship
If the product is not recyclable (or separable into recyclable parts) in mainstream local recycling systems, the manufacturer shall accept their product without additional cost (excluding transportation costs) for further recycling, or have arrangements with a local recycler to accept the product, or have an established product stewardship program. Products collected under the scheme shall not be disposed of in landfill or by incineration.
Desking Systems has a “Return policy” in compliance with the requirements of this criterion.
Coatings/Treatments
Furniture and fittings products (or components) must not be impregnated, labelled, coated or otherwise treated in a manner which would prevent post consumer recycling. Exemption may be made for products with a long product life where a coating or treatment would further extend the useful life of the product.
The products are not coated in a manner that would prevent recycling. This was confirmed during a site assessment.
Replacement Parts
For those parts of a product which are subject to wear (e.g., hinges, locks, table leaves), functionally compatible replacements shall be guaranteed for a period of at least five years. The manufacturer must make individual replacement parts available to consumers.
There are no parts that are subject to wear in the nominated product range and replacement parts are available upon request. Desking Systems has published a “Continuity Statement” assuring the customers about continuity of supply of spare parts in compliance with the requirements of this criterion.
Packaging Requirements
Chlorinated or halogenated plastics must not be used in product packaging. Used packaging shall be able to be recycled by local recycling systems.
Desking Systems uses a small quantity of polythene as packing material and the polythene is recovered for reuse if possible. Cardboard used for packing is recycled or reused. Blankets are used as interim packaging during transport, all of which are reused.
