Environmental Requirements |
Core Environmental Performance Characteristics |
Fitness for Purpose
Certified products should be good performers in their
intended application. Certain standards of product performance
are implicit in the label. |
The Mirra Chair, Caper Chair and
the Celle Chair are manufactured in the Herman Miller Zealand
Michigan plant, this facility is certified to ISO 9001:2000, the
certification was delivered by SGS, certificate number
US96/0636, expiry 30.10.08. The Zeeland facility operates an
onsite laboratory. The laboratory carries out fitness for
purpose testing and is accredited by the American Association
for Laboratory Certification. |
|
Plastic identification codes
are required upon product lines as per the criteria of the GECA
28 - 2006 Furniture and Fittings Standard. |
Herman Miller products display
appropriate resin identification codes on these components. |
Overall Loads
In order to reduce pollutant hazards in the disposal, landfill
and/or incineration of end-of-life furniture, the substances
listed in the GECA 28 - 2006 Furniture and Fittings Standard
must not be used. |
The Celle Chair is certified
Cradle to Cradle Silver. These have been evaluated for human
health, environmental health, and lifecycle attributes,
renewable energy, water stewardship and social responsibility
characteristics against stringent certification criteria. |
Chemical Additives
Furniture or fittings shall not contain carcinogenic
substances stipulated in the GECA 28 - 2006 Furniture and
Fittings Standard. |
There is evidence that no use is
made of carcinogenic substances during manufacture of the
nominated product lines. |
|
Prohibited Substances
Substances stipulated in criterion 3.3.3 of the GECA 28 - 2006
Furniture and Fittings Standard must not be used. |
These have been evaluated for
human health, environmental health, and lifecycle attributes,
renewable energy, water stewardship and social responsibility
characteristics against stringent certification criteria. The
Cradle to Cradle(tm) assessment addresses the substances mentioned
in this criterion. |
|
Separability |
There is no technical barrier to
the disassembly of the nominated chairs for further recovery and
recycling. The Cradle to Cradle(tm) Gold Certification also
addresses the products repairability. |
Product Custodianship
If the product is not recyclable (or separable into
recyclable parts) in mainstream local recycling systems, the
manufacturer shall accept their product without additional cost
(excluding transportation costs) for further recycling, or have
arrangements with a local recycler to accept the product, or
have an established product stewardship program. Products
collected under the scheme shall not be disposed of in landfill
or by incineration. |
There is a stewardship program for
Australia titled "Environmental Stewardship for Australia
and New Zealand. A client that wishes to return a product can
contact Herman Miller and request this return, Herman Miller
will then investigate the most up-to-date recycling option and
act upon these. The company has extended a commercial product
stewardship offer to the market. |
Coatings
Products (or components) must not be impregnated, labelled,
coated or otherwise treated in a manner which would prevent post
consumer recycling. Exemption may be made for products with a
long product life where a coating or treatment would further
extend the useful life of the product. |
No coating or treatment that will
prevent recycling is applied to the Herman Miller furniture
products. |
|
Replacement
parts
For those parts of a product which are subject to wear, e.g.
hinges, locks, table leaves, functionally compatible
replacements shall be guaranteed for a period of at least five
years. |
Replacement parts
are available for all parts that are subject to wear, all parts
are available long after the expiry of the warranty. Herman
Miller offers replacement parts for products the company has
stopped manufacturing decades ago. |
Compliance to Environmental
regulations
The applicant is required to comply with relevant
environmental legislation and government orders at the Local,
State and Commonwealth level, if these have been issued. An
applicant's compliance with this criteria may be established by
undertaking a series of random checks and gathering samples of
applicant operational procedures and documents by approved
assessors as evidence to support compliance during the
verification and /or a statement of self declaration by an
executive officer of the applicant organisation. |
The Herman Miller Michigan plants
are certified to ISO 14001:2004, the certification was delivered
by SGS, certificate number US03/3299, expiry 8.07.09. GECS has
received a signed declaration by Paul M. Murray, Director of
Environmental Health and Safety stating Herman Miller have not
been the subject of prosecution in an environmental court of law
in the past two years. |

product lifetime. 3. Maintenance instructions, if required.
