Description of the
Technology.
Joyce Foam Products manufactures the
largest range of
polyurethane foam products in Australia. Joyce foam is used in a
diverse range of products from consumer goods to industrial
applications.
Joyce Foam Products supplies approximately 40% of the flexible
polyurethane foam in Australia.
Joyce Foam Products produces over 70 grades of foam for use in
a range of applications. All of their GECA certified foam products
are covered by warranty for at least 5 years, with the Ultimate
Comfort and the Regal Comfort form products being covered for
15 years. Joyce Foam Products obtained a licence to produce
Urethane foam in 1954, with the first Joyce Foam Products foam
machine being commissioned in 1955.

Ultimate Comfort Foam has been
designed to give a soft initial feel with deep down support. The
first choice for cushioning in the furniture industry, this
state-of-the-art foam has an extended 15 year guarantee.
The high density of Regal Comfort foam ensures durability and deep
support whilst giving a luxurious feel. Regal Comfort offers a
combination of soft surface comfort with deep down support.
Indulgence Comfort has special energy absorbing properties
designed to give a totally new comfort feel. Once you stand up,
the foam slowly recovers its shape so it always looks smart.
Indulgence Comfort comes with a 15 year guarantee.
Indulgence Plus Comfort Foam is a
viscoelastic foam that is ideal as an overlay for immobile people,
significantly reducing the instance of pressure sores.

Sources

The natural fiber materials used in foam
manufacturing by Joyce Foam Products originate from certified

Polyurethane
padding
1. CFC, HCFC, HFC or Methylene Chloride shall not be used as
blowing agents.
2. Analine based amines, and pigments and catalysis based on
mercury, lead, cadmium, and chromium must not be added to the
padding material.
3. Where organic tin catalysts are used in the production of
flexible polyurethane, the manufacturer must have in place a
contract with a licensed or registered hazardous waste disposal
company who is responsible for the correct disposal of the
hazardous waste. |
None of the of the substances restricted by this
criterion are used in the certified products. Joyce Foam
Products use a specialised waste removal disposal management
company. |
Chemical Additives
Furniture or fittings shall not contain carcinogenic substances
in categories 1, 2A as classed by the International Agency for
Research on Cancer – http://www.iarc.fr. At levels which expose
the user to emissions greater than 1/20th of the NICNAS
recommended limits |
A review of MSDS for all production ingredients
reveals none of the substances restricted by this criteria are
used in the nominated product range. |
Prohibited Substances
Halogenated organic binding agents, analine based amines,
phalates, aziridine or polyaziridines as well as pigments and
additives that contain lead, tin, cadmium VI, mercury or their
compounds are prohibited. There are some exceptions, for example
the coating of metal gas lifts |
A review of MSDS for all production ingredients
reveals none of the substances mentioned in this criterion are
included in the nominated product range. |
Separability
The eco-labeled product shall be easily disassembled making
possible the recovery and recycling of materials used. In order
to facilitate recycling of the materials used in products, the
following materials have to be easily separated:
- Aluminium, if it composes ≥ 5% by weight of the ecolabelled
product;
- Steel, if it composes ≥ 10% by weight of the eco-labelled
product;
- Glass, if it composes ≥ 10% by weight of the ecolabelled
product;
- Plastic, if it composes ≥ 20% by weight of the ecolabelled
product. |
The Joyce Foam Products range under assessment
are single unit pieces within the furniture item. As such they
cannot be separated; rather they are separated from the final
furniture product. |
Product
Custodianship
The applicant shall accept their product without additional cost
(not including transportation costs)
for further recycling, or have arrangements with an Australian
plastics or steel recycler to accept the product, or have an
established product stewardship program. |
Joyce Foam Products will generally accept
returned products. Where there are health issues associated with
used foam, Joyce may chose to reject returned material based on
health legislations, health practices and production
practicalities. All waste is currently bailed and collected by a
manufacturer of carpet underlay. Other alternative applications
of scrap foam could be FE mattresses, dog mats, crumb foam,
futons, etc. |

3. Environmental and Social Regulatory Obligations:
GECA also found the range to
be fully compliant with their obligations under Labour,
Anti-Discrimination, and Safety Regulations. The company
has not been the subject of prosecution in relation to
compliance with labour, anti- discrimination, safety
regulations and environmental regulations.
