Core Environmental Criteria Tested:

Environmental Requirements

Core Environmental Performance Characteristics
Resin Identification Codes

To be licensed to carry the GEC environmental declaration an appropriate plastics resin identification code promulgated by the Plastics and Chemical Industry Association must be marked on each individual recycled plastic products or components weighing greater than 100gm.

Wilkahn Australian has undertaken an extensive plastic resin identification labeling program to ensure that all products components are compliant to the requirements of the standard.
Overall Loads

The following substances shall not be added to eco-labeled furniture during the reproduction process: Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium, Copper, Lead, Mercury, Fluorine, Chlorine, Pentachlorophenol (PCP), Tar oils and (benzo(a)pyrene).

The chairs under assessment do not include any powder coating finishes which are a particular concern in relation to this criterion. An inspection of MSDS’s for adhesives, foam and other components and finishes found none of the substances mentioned on this criterion are used in the nominated product range. Evidence for this criterion was based on an observation of the material characteristics of components, and evidence provided by key component manufacturers.
Formaldehyde Emissions

GECA requirement are <0.3mg/l

GECA has received a current Blue Angel certificate for the timber used in Wilkhahn’s products. This standard requires a 28th day 0.05 ppm limit, which represents a very low emission rate and is below Australian OH&S limits and well below the current benchmarks stipulated under the standard. The timber is in compliance to the requirements of this criterion.
Chemical Additives

Furniture or fittings shall not contain carcinogenic substances in categories 1, 2A as classed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer – http://www.iarc.fr.

An inspection of MSDS for production ingredients (see reference 3.3.1) finds no carcinogenic substances are used as additives in the production of the product line under verification.
Prohibited Substances

Halogenated organic binding agents, poly brominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants ,analine based amines, phalates, aziridine or polyaziridines as well as pigments and additives that contain lead, tin, cadmium VI, or mercury.

The substances listed in this criterion are not added to the products, this is apparent from a review of MSDS for all production ingredients and primary contact with the component suppliers.
Separability

The eco-labeled product shall be easily disassembled making possible the recovery and recycling of materials used.

The nominated chairs and tables range by Wilkhahn are largely mechanically fixed and there is no barrier in disassembly with common industry tools.
Product Custodianship

The applicant shall accept their product without additional cost (not including transportation costs) for further recycling.

GECA have inspected a product stewardship policy implemented by Wilkhahn; the company will take back the nominated products line and recycle components. Wilkhahn also has the commercial service of refurbishing old products and offering a new warranty to the market.
Coatings, Labels and Other Treatment

Furniture and fittings products (or components) must not be impregnated, labelled, coated or otherwise treated in a manner which would prevent post consumer recycling.

No coating or treatment that will prevent recycling is applied to the nominated Wilkhahn table and chair range.
Replacement Parts

For those parts of a product which are subject to wear, e.g. hinges, locks, table leaves, functionally compatible replacements shall be guaranteed for a period of at least five years.
